(Opinion) The Religious Foundation
Every true religion has its basis in the deity. The divine reality constitutes its foundation.
From the Latin ‘Religare’ – ‘to connect, join, bind, link’ etc, the word ‘religion’ connotes a linkage, a joint.
The Christian religion is thus understood as a ‘covenant’. It is an alliance of faith between the triune God and the Christian adherents.
Consequently, the foundation of the Christian religion is the covenant relationship.
Like a house, the strength of the covenant depends on God’s words: “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock” (Gospel).
On the basis of this text, it is not enough to know the words of God. The necessary and more crucial thing is acting on them.
Jesus thus made ‘doing his will’ the condition for salvation: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but who does the will of my Father in heaven” (ibid).
Through her liturgical actions, the Church offers us daily access to the words of God.
More importantly, at the end of the celebration, she commissions us ‘to go’ and practise what we have heard.
By this, we will not be mere “hearers” but equally “doers” of God’s word. We are sent to engage in the Seven Corporal and Seven Spiritual Works of Mercy.
Unfortunately, King Jehoiachin of Judah paid only lip service to God: “He did evil in the sight of the Lord, just as his forebears had done” (First Reading).
Such a weak foundation made him vulnerable. King Nebuchadnezzar attacked the city which collapsed was completely ruined. The Lord did not defend it.
Upon what is your religious foundation built: on stone of concrete actions or on sand of empty words?
