Voter Registration Exercise: Make Request to Parishes – Catholic Bishop to EC
Most Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu, the Catholic Bishop of Konongo-Mampong has directed the Electoral Commission of Ghana to make a formal request in the form of a letter to the Rector of various parishes they may need as registration centres.
According to the bishop, the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs for religious bodies on June 1, 2020 must also be adhered to. These directives form part of the two conditions expected to be met before EC officials can make use of any church premises for the registration exercise.
Reverend Osei -Bonsu, indicated that the letter from EC “must state the beginning and end dates of the exercise in the location”. He puts forward that “If such a request is not made, the Parish Priest or Rector is not obliged to release the facility for the exercise”
This was sighted in the Bishop’s circular to Priests, Religious and Lay Faithfuls within the Konongo-Mampong Diocese.
He also called for regular cleaning and disinfection of communal places and frequently touched surfaces such as
door knobs in addition to disinfection of churches regularly, which are in line with guidelines stipulated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
He emphasized that church premises cannot be released for use until the above -stated conditions are met.
The Electoral Commission is set to begin the compilation of a new voters’ registration on June 30, 2020 and will last until August 6, 2020. This is being done ahead of the December 2020 general elections.
