10 Parishes in Accra Benefit From Humanitarian Gesture of Missionary Agency and Caritas

The Caritas Office in the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, Ghana in collaboration with the International Help of Missionaries Incorporated (IHM), New York in the USA has reached out to 10 Catholic Churches with food items as part of efforts to support the needy and vulnerable in these communities in Accra.

The items are expected to provide relief to 750 households to be identified in these communities regardless of their religious affiliations lockdown as a result of COVID-19.

The donated items

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie who led the team to do the presentation on Sunday, April 12, 2020 indicated that, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be assisting their Churches to distribute the food items to the vulnerable beneficiaries who have been restricted from movements and work by the Government to help curb the spread of coronavirus.

The Archbishop said he would be happy if the items are distributed to even non-Catholic households within the catchment areas of the 10 Parishes.

“We want to reach out to the vulnerable, people of need in these ten Parishes that have been identified” he noted.

The Chief Shepherd of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra who is also the Apostolic Administrator of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese in the Western Region of Ghana, gave assurance that the Catholic Church will further be reaching out to a lot more communities and people during these difficult times.

He thanked the IHM under the leadership of Mr. Don P. Magnotta for supporting this humanitarian initiative being led by the Caritas Office and further called on other groups and stakeholders to replicate this charitable gesture to the needy during these restrictive period.

Rev. Father Cletus M. K. Forson, a Trustee representing IHM and the Priest -in-Charge of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in his response, acknowledge that his NGO intends to make further donations to “families hurting during this pandemic”.

He encouraged the Caritas Team to take very good care of the donations to be able to attract additional support from IHM and its partners.

Speaking to newswatchgh.com, Fr. Forson said IHM has been supporting other African countries and was hopeful that they will continue to make some these interventions in our communities.

The items to be distributed include 750 bags of rice, 750 bottles of Sunflower oil, 92 cartons of Tuna chucks, 92 cartons of tomatoes and 25 cartons of Indomie.

The first batch of Churches earmarked to benefit from this humanitarian gesture are St. Anthony, Nungua, St. Maurice, La, St. Peter, Osu, Sacred Heart, Derby Avenue, Martyrs of Uganda, Mamprobi, St. Joseph the Worker, Medie, Sacred Heart, Afuaman, St. Joseph, Obom/Ashalaja, St. Alphonse, Ga Odumase, and St. Joseph, Weija /Tettegu.
