The Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, has called on all faithful to embrace the 2025 lenten season as a time of repentance, renewal, and hope.
This year’s observance of lent which starts from March 5, 2025 is particularly significant as it takes place within the context of the Jubilee Year, emphasizing restoration and spiritual renewal.
Archbishop Kwofie in his message to the people of God released on February 28, highlighted Jeremiah, often referred to as the “weeping prophet”, as a reflection for the season, stating that , Jeremiah’s message conveys hope.
He said, “Although Jeremiah’s words warned of impending disaster, they also carried a message of hope: “Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work will be rewarded,” declares the Lord. “They will return from the land of the enemy. So, there is hope for your descendants.” Jeremiah 31:16-17”.
He also addressed the issues facing the nation, including corruption, the exploitation of natural resources and the growing trend of young people seeking better opportunities abroad due to a sense of hopelessness.
However, he reassured that hope remains attainable through sincere repentance and a commitment to restoring both individual lives and the broader society.
“Yet, beloved, there is hope. This Lent, we must rediscover the anchor in this boat, which is being tossed about by the waves of injustice and corruption. There is hope because, if we turn to the Lord, He will help each of us to repent and restore not only our own lives but also our communities and our nation”, he said.
Additionally, he called on families, spouses, workers, Priests and Religious to reconcile and be committed in achieving the good of the nation and seeking the face of the Lord through repentance.
In a unique initiative called the “Bonaventure Lent Challenge,” Archbishop Kwofie invites all faithful to walk in the footsteps of Jeremiah by engaging in prayer and sacrifice.
He encouraged for contributions towards the Legacy of Hope Project, which aims not only to address physical needs but also to foster a spiritual legacy for future generations.
