Sr. Justina Dery, a retired teacher of Religious Studies and Theology of Consecrated Life and a Council member of the Sisters of Mary Immaculate (SMI) Congregation facilitated the workshop under the theme: “Gender-based Violence, Abuse and Trauma.”

The Congregation has three groups of retreats within the year which usually starts with a workshop to enable members to prepare themselves adequately to proceed with their annual retreat.

However, the other two groups left would also go through the same workshop and with the same facilitator.

The first group started their workshop from January 25 to 26, 2025 at the SMI Mother House Conference Hall Daffiama in the Upper West Region, Ghana.

On the other hand, the retreat began on January 27 and would end on February 2, 2025.

These Sisters are journeying with the Lord for six days.

Sr. Dery equipped the Sisters with skills and strategies to prevent gender-based Violence, Abuse and Trauma.

She also taught the participants how to respond to, and support survivors effectively.

In her presentation, she took the Sisters through the causes and consequences of Gender-based Violence; Physical, Spiritual, Psychological, Sexual, Emotional and, Financial.

The workshop was to help dispel misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding the issues.

Sr. Dery concluded the workshop with the support systems that provide safe space for survivors of violence and abuse, to receive appropriate support, care and counseling.

The workshop was a pathway for disclosure, ensuring that concerns are heard and addressed properly.

It received active participation by the Sisters of Mary Immaculate.

The Superior General of the SMI Congregation, Sr. Christina Pogbeyir, who opened the workshop, emphasized that, the theme played a vital role in creating a safer, more supportive and more inclusive environment for the Members of the Congregation and the people they minister to.

Sr. Agnes Adongo, a retired teacher and Headmistress of Mary Immaculate Catholic School on behalf of the participants thanked the facilitator Sr. Dery for the awareness created on the Gender-based Violence and Trauma.
