Rev. Fr. Lawrence Abben-Yeboah of the St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church at Amanful in the Archdiocese of Cape Coast has expressed worry about the diminishing reverence for the Holy Eucharist among Catholics.
During the celebration of the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ on June 2, 2024, he reflected on the past dedication of the faithful, who once traveled great distances to receive Communion, a practice that has waned in modern times.
Fr. Abben-Yeboah stressed that the Body and Blood of Christ are more than mere symbols; they are sources of abundant grace.
He called on Catholics to receive the Sacrament frequently and with genuine devotion rather than out of mere obligation.
He also highlighted a noticeable decline in Mass attendance and the reception of Communion, urging the congregation to rejuvenate their appreciation for this central aspect of their faith.
He pointed out that sin was the only barrier to receiving this divine gift and encouraged the faithful to reflect on their relationship with the Holy Eucharist, recommitting to its cherished mystery.
