Must read

Mrs. Nana Abena Kwakyi, Managing Director of Morning Star School in Accra has challenged parents and the general public to take keen interest in learning about individuals with special needs and abilities.

She made this statement during the Annual Fun Day Games of New Horizon Special School in cantonments, calling on all parents and people in society to support the interest of individuals with special needs and abilities.

She said, “Let’s learn how to gain more information about persons with special needs, improve our understanding about special needs education and the industry, commit to supporting and promoting their courses for relevance and inclusivity”.

According to Mrs. Kwakyi, these individuals are part of the society and have the potential of demonstrating their own abilities through requisite training.

She acknowledged the effort of the New Horizon Special School in educating and developing children and adults with special needs and autism.

“This great institution has championed and heralded attention to special education in Ghana and beyond our borders,” she stated.

“Additionally, this institution’s focus on a personalized approach, teaching and supporting learners with unique needs has achieved outstanding results”, she said.

She highlighted the importance of special education, recognizing the challenges individuals with special needs and abilities face.

She said, “We recognize that they have challenges but they have the potential and they have various talents and so special education highlights the need to find unique and diverse ways to harness this potential and to make special citizens of our society.”

Mrs. Kwakyi, while speaking, acknowledged the efforts made by the Ghana Education Service to include and empower individuals with special abilities through their Special Education Unit.

She encouraged the government to do more in terms of supporting institutions like New Horizon Special School.

“… whiles congratulating them for what they have done so far, we would encourage them to do more. Indeed it is very difficult and costly to raise our children and to train them adequately and so if more opportunities are provided by the Special Education Unit of the Ghana Education Service with the support of the government it would be a delight”, she noted.

The 2025 edition of the New Horizon Special School Fun Day Games was themed, “For the righteous fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity”

This event aimed at showcasing the talents and sportsmanship of the special needs population in Ghana while advocating for fitness and sports for all.
