The Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, has reiterated his deep concern over the ongoing illegal mining activities known as “Galamsey” and their damaging effects on the environment and public health.

Addressing the people of God of St. Barnabas Church at Haatso Agbogba on Sunday September 28,  2025, the Archbishop noted that as the Chief Shepherd of the people of Accra, he must be passionate about the fight against the menace because it poses health risks to the people in the country.

He said, “You may be wondering why I am so fixated on Galamsey. My answer is, why must I not? As the Chief Shepherd of the people of Accra… I must feel very concerned of every step we take in the fight against Galamsey. ”

Archbishop Kwofie during his Pastoral visit to the Church also referenced a statement from the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference that called for a State of Emergency in areas affected by galamsey.

He noted that the request has not been granted, stating that “National Security Zones was declared. I see that declaring National Security Zones is declaring a State of Emergency in disguise.”

Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie emphasized the urgency of addressing the galamsey crisis, highlighting the threats posed to the lives and livelihoods of citizens of the country due to “the greed of a few people who indulge in Galamsey”.

He raised alarms about the contamination of soil, air, and water due to toxic chemicals such as mercury, which are used in illegal mining operations.

Drawing inspiration from the story of the Prophet Amos, Archbishop Kwofie has called on all to speak against social injustice in the country noting that true faith involves standing up for the oppressed and marginalized.

He added, “God gets angry when he sees people sin and perish. But His anger lasts only for a moment because he wants you to live and prosper. When God is angry, He is demonstrating His love for all of us. He wants you to repent for his mercy endures forever.”

As part of the pastoral visit, the Archbishop administered the Sacrament of confirmation to 84 Catholics.
