True Peace Begins with Conversion of Heart – Says Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana at Bishops’ Plenary Assembly

Must read

The Most Rev. Julien Kaboré, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, has called on the Church and all Ghanaians to embrace deep personal and spiritual renewal as the foundation for lasting justice and peace.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Annual Plenary Assembly of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) in Damongo on Monday, November 10, 2025, His Excellency Kaboré reminded the bishops and faithful that no genuine transformation can occur in the nation without a conversion of heart.

“Any authentic work for reconciliation, justice, and peace must begin with metanoia, that authentic conversion of the heart,” he said, referencing Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Exhortation Africae Munus.

“This call is not addressed to others first, but to us: pastors, consecrated persons, and all the baptized.”
The Nuncio explained that conversion must be nourished by prayer, catechesis, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation —the “school of the heart,” where believers learn to resist indifference, resentment, and the temptation to selfish gain.

He further urged the Church to cultivate a spirituality of communion, one that enables Christians to “see each person as a gift, to welcome the good in others, and to bear one another’s burdens.”

According to him, this is the true path to a synodal Church, one that walks together in unity, fraternity, and service.
“Only Christians who are deeply rooted in Christ, nourished by His Word and the Eucharist, can be artisans of reconciliation and builders of justice and peace,” he affirmed.

The Apostolic Nuncio lamented that while Ghana enjoys stability, the nation and continent still face moral and social challenges that require courage and conversion at every level of leadership and society.
He also warned against the growing tendency to prioritize wealth and power over human dignity, saying that “peace can never be built on greed or indifference.”

“We live at a time when truth is often compromised for convenience, when integrity is tested by greed, and when public trust is weakened by the actions of a few,” he noted.
“In such times, the Church must be the voice that calls Ghana back to her covenant of righteousness.”

The Plenary Assembly, which runs from November 7 to 14, 2025, brings together bishops, clergy, and Catholic leaders from across the country under the theme “A Synodal Church at the Service of Justice and Peace in Ghana.”

Participants are reflecting on how the Church can remain a beacon of moral integrity and national unity while strengthening her prophetic mission in society.
