The Most Rev. Julien Kaboré, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, has urged the Catholic Church in Ghana to remain a fearless moral voice and “sentinel of truth” in times when public trust, integrity, and justice are at risk.
Delivering his address at the opening of the 2025 Annual Plenary Assembly of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) in Damongo, His Excellency Kaboré reminded the bishops that their prophetic mission is to defend human dignity and speak for the voiceless.
“The Church must remain a sentinel, the one who keeps watch during the night, who refuses to surrender to darkness or fatigue,” he said.
“Wherever the value of human life is threatened, wherever public authority mortgages the present and the future for private interest, the Church must be present, must speak, must comfort, must form consciences, and must accompany.”
He described the prophetic ministry of the Church as one rooted in both courage and compassion, noting that the Church’s witness must continue even when it challenges systems of power or exposes corruption.

The Nuncio warned that Ghana, like many parts of Africa, faces “moral crossroads” where truth is sometimes compromised for convenience and public interest is overshadowed by personal gain.
“True peace does not arise from fragile balances of power or negotiations of convenience,” he cautioned.
“The peace Christ gives is born of a humanity reconciled in God, a peace the Church is called to announce and serve as sacrament.”
Drawing inspiration from the Synod on Synodality, he stressed that a synodal Church must not only listen but also discern and speak, offering moral direction and hope to a divided world.
“A Church which walks together, listening to the Spirit and to one another, becomes a standard lifted among the nations,” he said, quoting from the Synod’s final document.
“She answers not with fear or resignation, but with hope grounded in Christ: Take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Most. Rev. Kaboré also emphasized that the Church’s prophetic witness must be exercised with humility and unity, ensuring that her moral leadership heals rather than divides.
The 2025 GCBC Plenary Assembly, hosted by the Diocese of Damongo, is being held under the theme “A Synodal Church at the Service of Justice and Peace in Ghana.”
It brings together bishops, priests, and Catholic leaders from across the nation to reflect on how the Church can continue to serve as a beacon of faith, justice, and moral renewal in Ghanaian society.
