At the opening of the 2025 Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) Plenary Assembly in Damongo, the Most Rev. Peter Paul Y. Angkyier, Bishop of Damongo appealed to all Bishops to foster peace and unity, while renewing their commitment to develop the Savannah Region.
He urged both the Church and civic leaders to strengthen efforts in peacebuilding, education, and environmental care, stressing that the Church’s mission must always reflect the values of justice, compassion, and stewardship.
“We are called to be agents of reconciliation, instruments of peace, and guardians of creation,” Bishop Angkyier affirmed.

The Bishop appealed to teachers and educational workers to rededicate themselves to the moral and intellectual formation of young people, noting that education remains one of the most powerful tools for transformation in deprived communities.
He also called on government and traditional authorities to support initiatives that promote social harmony and equitable development, particularly in the face of climate challenges and rural poverty affecting the Savannah Region.
Acknowledging the diverse gathering of clergy, laity, and traditional leaders, Bishop Angkyier encouraged closer collaboration among all sectors of society.

He emphasised that the Gospel’s message of love and service must translate into concrete action, especially in supporting families, protecting the environment, and fostering youth empowerment.
The Bishop expressed hope that the Plenary Assembly, themed “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission,” would inspire a renewed sense of purpose and commitment among all present.
“This gathering is not only a moment of reflection but a call to act, to serve, to listen, and to build together a Church and society where no one is left behind,” he said.
