A ban on movements of persons in Accra and Kumasi took effect from 1:00 am March 30 as announced by the president of Ghana Nana Akuffo Addo on Friday, March 27, 2020.
The President declared Greater Accra and Kumasi as a partial “lockdown” zone to aid reduce the spread of coronavirus while addressing the Nation on Ghana’s update on coronavirus cases.
He mentioned some areas such as Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa as places where stricter measures should be put in place to curb the spread of the virus.
The president mentioned that the total number of infected people are one hundred and thirty-seven (137) and ninety-seven percent (97%) of total cases recorded in Ghana are travelers who came into the country with the disease.
He further gave a break down on positive tested cases by stating that, before the closure of the border, one thousand and thirty people arrived in the country by air at the time off the announcement.
After conducting tests on them, seventy-eight (78) of them tested positive. Among the remaining fifty-nine (59) cases, fifty-three of them are receiving medical treatment and are improving and will be discharged if their second test proves negative.
He added that fourteen (14) of them are receiving home treatment in self-isolation, four (4) aged people who tested positive coupled with serious underlying medical conditions lost their lives and two (2) had fully recovered from the virus.
