Modern Idolatry Threatens Christian Faith’ – Apostolic Nuncio Warns at St. John Bosco Parish

Must read

The Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Most Rev. Julien Kaboré, has warned Christians against modern forms of idolatry that subtly replace God with wealth, ambition, and self-sufficiency.

Speaking during the celebration of the feast of St. John Bosco at St. John Bosco Parish, Tema, on Sunday, 1st February, 2026, the Nuncio observed that idolatry today often takes hidden and socially acceptable forms.

“Idolatry is not a relic of ancient times… it is very contemporary,” he said, explaining that it may now appear as “relentless ambition, the pursuit of status, the illusion of self-sufficiency, or the promise of quick success and effortless prosperity at any cost.”

He cautioned that such pursuits ultimately fail to satisfy the human heart. “Many voices present themselves as guides to happiness. They promise much, but they cannot give what the heart truly seeks,” he warned.

The Nuncio stressed that the Beatitudes confront these illusions directly, urging believers “not to place our trust in what is fragile and passing, nor to seek happiness from those who promise quick success and easy wealth.”

He called on the faithful, especially the youth, to remain vigilant, he reminded them that “only the Lord can sustain our hope and fulfil the deepest desire of the human heart.”
