On April 1, 2020, Religions for Peace invited global believers to join senior religious leaders from over 10 diverse traditions across the globe in an online moment of prayer for the world and those affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
The event united leaders and followers of diverse religions around the world in a spiritual moment of shared humanity – calling for health, compassion and strength. The moment of prayer was broadcast live on the social media pages of the organization.
Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, Nigeria, was one of leaders guiding this spiritual moment and speaking to Vatican News, he referred to the initiative as a “powerful symbol.”
He stressed the importance of removing divisions from our midst: “There is no example of our unity in need as we now have under coronavirus. It is clear now that the whole of humanity is one. There is no distinction between Christians, Muslims or Buddhists, Africans and Europeans, black and white,” he said.
The moment concluded with a shared interfaith commitment by all participants. The complete video is available on YouTube.
Religions for Peace is a global interfaith peacebuilding coalition in 90 countries across 6 regions, celebrating 50 years advancing action for peace in 2020.
