Ghana’s President Congratulates New Catholic Bishop of Wiawso

Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has congratulated the Most Rev. Samuel Nkuah-Boateng, the newly ordained Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wiawso with a call on him to discharge his duty as a true disciple of Christ.

Speaking at the episcopal ordination and installation of Bishop Nkuah-Boateng as the second Bishop of Wiawso Diocese at the St. Joseph Senior High School Park at Sefwi Datano on Friday, April 21, 2023, the President praised the new Bishop for his commitment and dedication to the Church that had put him in a good stead to be appointed by the Holy Father.

Saying that this was the first time of witnessing an episcopal ordination in the Catholic Church as president of the West African country of Ghana, he urged Bishop Nkuah-Boateng to put his episcopacy into the hands of God.

He advised him (Bishop) to exercise his responsibilities with humility and commitment, praying that Bishop Nkuah-Boateng would continue the works of his predecessor, the Most Rev. Joseph Francis Kweku Essien, whom he also thanked for his 23 years of episcopacy.

He asked the Bishop to also ensure the continuous growth of the Diocese and appealed to him to pray for him as President of Ghana, the government appointees and the nation as a whole so that they could exercise their task with integrity and humility.

Bishop Nkuah-Boateng was appointed by the Holy Father as the second Bishop of Wiawso on January 26, 2023. The announcement was made in in Wiawso by the Most Rev. Henryk Mieczyslaw Jagodzinski, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, to take over from Most Reverend Joseph Kweku Essien of the Wiawso Diocese.

Asking the newly ordained and installed Bishop to also pray for peace in Ghana, President Akufo-Addo counseled Catholics and Christians in general to rise to their religious responsibilities to transform and enhance nation building.

Being a disciple of Christ meant one must be prepared to live a life based on the words and teachings of Christ, he said at the episcopal ordination attended by hundreds of Catholics and non-Catholics.

According to him, “The kingdom of God is indeed the central theme of the bible and therefore must be the central theme of our lives as Christians.”

President Akufo-Addo was of the view that the growth of the Church should not only be measured by the number of its members but also by the quality of its members who are spiritually dedicated to the virtues of Christ and are ready to help build the Church and nation.

He promised the Chief and people of Wiawso of his government’s commitment of ensuring the completion of the 13-kilometer Wiawso town roads.

Bishop Nkuah-Boateng later offered a special prayer to President Akufo-Addo.

Meanwhile, Nana Okogyeaman Kwaku Gyambra III, Paramount Chief Sefwi Chirano Traditional Area and Vice President of the Western North Regional House of Chiefs has assured Bishop Nkuah-Boateng of the unflinching support from the Traditional Rulers.

Speaking on behalf the many Chiefs and elders who attended the April 21, 2023 ordination and installation Mass, he called on the people to give their maximum support to the new Bishop so that he could succeed and build the Church as his predecessor did.

Bishop Nkuah-Boateng was consecrated and installed by Most Rev. Henryk M. Jagodzinski, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana assisted by Most Rev. Joseph Francis Kweku Essien, Bishop Emeritus of Wiawso, who was the first Bishop and the Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast who was the homilist.
