The ordination of Friar John Decribb Jackson Amankwaa into priesthood took place at St. Francis Of Assisi Catholic Church, Awoshie-Anyaa, Accra on January 11, 2025.
This ceremony brought together friends, family, fellow clergy members, and parishioners to witness the fulfilment of years of preparation, prayer, and dedication to the service of God.
The rite of ordination is a sacred and profound ritual that marks the transition of Friar John from a man of faith into a servant of the people.
The Most Rev. John Kobina Louis in his homily congratulated Friar John, acknowledging the importance of the his ordination and the significance of his calling.
“You have been chosen, Friar John,” he said, “This is not a choice made by you, but by God. Priesthood is a calling – it is not for the faint of heart, but for those who are willing to serve others in love and sacrifice.”
He reminded Friar John that being a Priest is not about performing rituals and ceremonies, but about embodying the spirit of Christ in every action, every word, and every thought.
“A Priest is not only a minister of the Sacrament, but a prophet. A priest is called to speak God’s truth into the world, to stand as a shepherd to His flock, guiding them with wisdom and compassion. A priest must also be a man of sacrifice, offering himself as a channel for Christ’s love and grace.”, Bishop Louis said.
He also reminded Friar John not to be afraid, for the path of the priesthood could be challenging, but with God’s grace, he would be equipped to face whatever lay ahead.
He said, “Let humility be your hallmark …may you be a true servant, ever seeking the will of God and serving His people with love, compassion, and devotion.”
Friar John took an oath of obedience which is a solemn vow that binds him to the will of God and the Church.
Following the oath was the Litany of Supplication, a melodic prayer that calls upon the saints and angels to intercede on behalf of the candidate, asking for divine protection, guidance, and strength.
The most sacred part of the ordination which is the laying of hands involves the bishop and priests present in the church to lay their hands on Friar John’s head one after the other, invoking the Holy Spirit to descend upon him and empower him for his sacred ministry.
Most Rev. John Kobina Louis then said the prayer of ordination, and Friar John was officially consecrated as a Priest of the Catholic Church.
As Mass concluded, the newly ordained Priest expressed his deep appreciation for all who had supported him along the way. He thanked his family, friends, and the community for their unwavering love and encouragement. But most of all, he thanked God for His faithfulness and for the privilege of answering the call to serve.
