Accra Christian Mothers Support Akosombo Dam Spillage Victims

Must read

The members of the Christian Mothers Association in the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra have visited their members and others in the Battor and Mepe Communities who were affected by Akosombo dam spillage.

Led by the President of the Association, Mother Eunice Dumashie on Thursday, October 19, the members commiserated with them and presented some relief items to them on behalf of the Christian Fathers, Sons and Daughters.

The items included bags and cartons of food, fresh vegetables, Ga kenkey, fresh bread, mosquito nets, clothes, shoes, sanitary pads, baby diapers, toiletries, bottles and bags of drinking water.

A delegation of 29 members selected from the eight Deaneries in the Archdiocese were met on arrival by Rev. Fr. Mathias King, the Priest-in-charge of the St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church at Battor and his team who briefed the Mothers on the situation and led them to visit the various holding sites to see the damage caused by the water spillage.

Five Mothers had earlier visited the communities to see the real situation on the ground and presented 50 bags of water and reported the havoc caused and the urgent need for relief items.

According to the Accra CMA President “We worked with speed and compassion within five days and went back in a full bus a long truck and a pick up full of items from our hearts to all who find themselves in this unfortunate situation.”

She added: “We pray for God’s protection for them and may this situation end soon” and thanked all mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who contributed to give hope and put a little smile on the faces of our members and all the victims when the emergency calls were placed.

The advance gesture by the Accra CMA is in line with an urgent appeal launched later by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, the Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp to help the victims devastated by floods in the Volta and Eastern Regions following the spillage of the Akosombo dam.

The situation had been quite devastating as many houses have been submerged, with socio-economic activities at a stand-still.
