Accra East Grand KSJI Congratulates Noble Brother Commodore Bessing as the Acting Chief of Naval Staff

The Leadership of the Accra East Grand Commandery of the Knights of St. John International has congratulated Noble Brother Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing on his appointment as the Acting Chief of Naval Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.

This was contained in a congratulatory Message signed by the Grand President, Brig. Gen. Samuel Baimbill-Johnson and Col. Robert Dela Yao Mawuenyegah, the Grand Secretary of the Accra East Grand Commandery on behalf of the Grand Board of Trustees.

The Message acknowledged Noble Brother Commodore Bessing’s “prestigious appointment as a resounding endorsement of his outstanding leadership, unwavering commitment, and altruistic service to our nation.”

In a strategic reset aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency and leadership of the Ghana Navy within the ranks of the Ghana Armed Forces, the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s elevation of the new Service Chief is a true testament of the exemplary behaviour and dedication to the tenets of the Noble Order which has brought distinction not only to himself and the Ghana Armed Forces but also to the Accra East Grand Commandery and the entire KSJI Fraternity.

Commodore Bessing who is a member of the Queen of Peace Local Commandery # 604, Madina has brought honour which the Accra East Grand Board described as a promotion “well-deserved acknowledgment of his tireless endeavours to serve others and make a positive impact in his community.”

Commodore Bessing’s renowned military career began in January 1991 when he joined the Ghana Military Academy as a member of Regular Career Course 32. He was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Executive Branch of the Ghana Navy on 14th August 1992.

His first job was undertaking pivotal missions with the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) during Liberia and Sierra Leone’s tumultuous periods, while he was alternating aboard various naval ships from 1992 to 1998.

He further enhanced his leadership capabilities after becoming the Executive Officer of Ghana Navy Ship SEBO in 1999 and later commanding the ship between 2004 and 2006.

Commodore Bessing’s impressive portfolio includes being Assistant Director of Naval Administration, Liaison Officer to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and Military Observer with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).

His command experience is complemented by his tenure as Commanding Officer, Basic Leadership and Training School, and his participation in a number of international operations, including the deployment of a Military Observer within the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC).

With a Bachelor of Arts in Statistics and Economics from the University of Ghana, Commodore Bessing also holds a Master of Arts in International Affairs from the University of Ghana. His academic credentials are matched by his training at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and other military training in Nigeria, the UK, and the USA.

Before his current assignment, Commodore Bessing worked as Defence Attaché in Abuja, Nigeria, and was Chief Staff Officer at the Naval Headquarters from August 2019 to March 2022. His latest appointment as Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) positioned him for this key leadership role in the Ghana Navy.

In his new position as Acting Chief of Naval Staff, Commodore Bessing is set to leverage his vast experience in advancing naval operations and enhancing maritime security in Ghana.
