African Catholic Journalists Urged to be Circumspect in Reporting on COVID-19

Must read

The Executive Council of the Union of the Africa Catholic Press (UCAP), has urged Catholic Journalists in the continent working in the media especially those at the front line of the novel Covid-19 to provide listerners and viewers with truthful and verified information.

A Press Release signed by George Sunguh, the UCAP President based in Kenya, stated that “As Catholic journalists, you are expected to be agents of hope and role models in times of despair and hopelessness like this. As COVID-19 spreads, so do the levels of anxiety causing state of helplessness.”

“You should, therefore, remain on the frontline in educating the masses with well researched and informed details of the disease and how to stay safe,” the statement added.

According to the statement, “since the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus, journalists across the world are doing well in the battle as they educate people about the virus and how to take precautionary measures in not contracting the virus and also how to prevent the spread of the virus.”

UCAP is an organisation that brings together Catholic journalists both in the church and secular media across Africa and recognised by the Vatican.
