The St. Joseph Quasi Parish at Alakple in the Keta-Akatsi Diocese has been selected to host the 2026 Chrism Mass, a significant annual liturgical celebration in the Catholic Church.
The Wednesday, April 1, 2026, Chrism Mass is expected to draw clergy, religious men and women, and lay faithful from across the diocese, marking a moment of deep spiritual renewal and unity within the Church.
It is one of the biggest programmes to be hosted by the Alakple Church and a diocesan programme like the Papal Awards held in Alakple in 2018, during which one of the citizens, Elixabeth Dogbatsey Attachie, was invested as a Dame of St. Sylvester, Pope.
The Chrism Mass holds profound importance in the life of the Catholic Church. Celebrated once a year, usually during Holy Week, it is the occasion during which the Diocesan Bishop consecrates the Sacred Chrism and blesses the Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick.
These holy oils are subsequently distributed to Priests in the various parishes and are used throughout the year in the administration of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders.
Beyond the blessing of oils, the Chrism Mass is also a powerful expression of communion between the Bishop and his priests. During the celebration, priests renew the promises they made at their ordination, reaffirming their commitment to serve God and His people faithfully. This aspect of the Mass underscores the unity and shared mission of the clergy within the diocese.
For the Catholic community in Alakple, hosting the 2026 Chrism Mass is both an honour and a testament to the growth of the Church in the area. Over the years, St. Joseph Quasi Parish has developed into a vibrant centre of faith, contributing significantly to the spiritual life of the Keta-Akatsi Diocese. The selection of Alakple as host highlights its increasing importance within the diocesan structure.
The Church in Alakple has also distinguished itself through its contribution to vocations. Over the years, the community has produced notable Priests and Religious, serving in various capacities within and beyond the diocese, including Rev Fr. John Kofi Tasiame of blessed memory, Sr. Doris Avevor, and Rev. Bro. John Yao Deamesi, Rev. Bro. Paul Dogbey, Rev. Fr. Patrick Agbeko, Rev. Vivien Adaklumegah, Rev. Fr. Johnny Agboli, MCCJ, Sr. Gifty Anastasia Blewu, SMMC, Rev. Fr. Stanley Azameti, Rev. Fr. Eric Kplorla Dagbui, Rev. Fr. Kpeiyebor, Rev. Fr. Dogbatsey, and Rev. Fr. Mamertus Adaklumega, MCCJ
This steady growth in vocations reflects the strong faith formation and commitment of families and parish leaders in nurturing future leaders of the Church.
Preparations for the 2026 Chrism Mass are expected to involve both spiritual and logistical efforts, with parishioners working closely with diocesan authorities to ensure a successful celebration.
As the diocese looks forward to this important event, the hosting of the Chrism Mass in Alakple is anticipated to deepen the faith of the people, strengthen bonds within the Church, and inspire more vocations.
It will stand as a moment of grace not only for the local community but for the entire Keta-Akatsi Diocese.
All are invited to the 2026 Chrism Mass in Alakple. The Bishop, the Most Rev Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, SVD, and Bishop Emeritus, the Most Rev. Anthony Adanuty, as well as all Priests and Religious Brothers and Sisters in the Diocese, would be in attendance.
Expected to attend are also many faithful from most Parishes in this Diocese. Indeed, the gathering of Bishops, Priests, Religious Brothers and Sisters on the soil of Alakple is a “BIG BLESSING” to the Alakple Community.
