Basic School Girls Urged to Avoid Unplanned Pregnancies

Must read

Ms. Ethel Buah, Co- Chairperson Service Committee of Zonta Club of Accra II, has advised girls in basic schools to avoid unplanned pregnancies to achieve good academic outcomes.

She gave the advice at an event to honour and celebrate beneficiaries of the Zonta Girls Club’s Scholarship Project.

The Zonta Girls Scholarship Project was initiated by the Zonta Club of Accra II in the 2015 and 1016 academic year with girls in Primary four and one girl in primary three in the Greater Accra Region.

It is to support the education of girls and improve their lives leading to healthier families and stronger communities.

Ms Buah noted that, some girls were not able to continue their education to the senior high level due to teenage pregnancy and charged the beneficiaries not to allow that (teenage pregnancy) to steal their future.

She tasked the Zonta Girls to be ambassadors of the Club on teenage pregnancy and educate their friends and other adolescents on the effects of teenage pregnancy.

Mrs. Rachel Badoo, a past President of the Club said eleven deprived girls were selected based on their academic potential and recommendation for support.

The girls are from the Abelemkpe Basic School II, the Dzorwulu JHS, the Ogbojo Presbyterian JHS and the New Ningo Primary JHS B.

She said the Club gave them stationaries, school uniforms and incidental fees for tuition and extra classes.

The Club also spent about GHC6,000.00 to prepare them for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination.

Mrs Badoo said the Club had plans to continue with the Project to support the girls through Senior High School.

Ms Monica Martinson, Charter President of the Club, said the Scholarship Project was an opportunity for them to give back to society.

‘‘If we have been blessed then we need to bless others too,’’ she said and advised the girls to continue to be serious with their studies.
