All roads are leading to the Christ the King Parish Hall, opposite the Jubilee House, Accra today, Sunday, November 28, 2021, for the launch of the 70th Anniversary (Platinum) of the establishment of the premier Catholic Boys School in Ghana’s Volta Region, Bishop Herman College (BIHECO).
Members of Bishop Herman Old Boys Union (BHOBU) are feverishly gearing up for the launch at 3:00pm, expected to be attended by high-level dignitaries of BHOBUs and friends of the School.
Under the distinguished patronage of Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and an old Student, the 70th anniversary is on the Theme: “70 Years of Excellence in Catholic Education.”
As part of preparation for the launch, some BHOBUs were privileged to be guests on Citi FM 97.3 breakfast show on Friday to discuss the launch of the year-long 70th Anniversary.
At the Studio to represent BHOBU were Mr. Edward Ayem, the General Secretary of the National Executive Council (NEC) and Mr. Simon Madjie, Esq., both members of BHOBU 97 year group.
To support the BHOBUs at the studio was Mrs. Rita Rockson, a member of the Past Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) Girls Association (POGA) 98 year Group.
Mr. Ayem noted that BIHECO was the pride of the Volta Region, hence, cannot be left to go down, saying “you cannot the script the history of Ghana without mentioning Bishop Herman.”
He said 70th Anniversary was worth celebrating for any institution, hence called on lovers of BIHECO and other philanthropists to come onboard to support in which ever to restore the glory of BIHECO, which had churn out many prominent people.
On his part, Mr. Madjie said all those who believe in education and the vision of giving back should come on board to celebrate and support as Soldiers of Christ.
Mrs. Rockson who would be one of the Masters of ceremony at today’s launch said the POGAs were fully in collaboration with BHOBU, adding “you cannot mention BHOBU without POGA.”
As part of the Anniversary celebration, the NEC has launched an appeal to raise GHc500,000 in aid of the rehabilitation of the school’s “Giant Block” which is in a serious dilapidated state and other infrastructures.
As Guests on the Citi breakfast show, they collectively appealed to BHOBUs, POGAs and friends of BIHECO to be a part of the launch to live the BIHECO dream as well as join in the campaign to raise funds for the refurbishment of the school infrastructures.
Bishop Herman College was founded on February 28, 1952 at Kpando in the Volta Region of Ghana by the then Keta Diocese of the Catholic Church as a boy’s Secondary Boarding School.
BIHECO as the School has come to be known, was named after Bishop Augustine Herman, a Frenchman who was Bishop of the Keta Diocese from 1923-1945.
Bishop Herman’s legendary exemplary Christian life and his love for education saw him setting up Schools in most of the communities he succeeded in planting the Catholic faith.
It came thus as no surprise that when the Keta Diocese wanted to establish an exemplary, par excellence secondary school to train young boys in the pursuit of spiritual and academic discipline, it was decided to name BIHECO after him.
The School started in the premises of the Roman Catholic Mission, Kpando (Gabi) and in 1954 moved to its home on the Aloryi Hills overlooking the Kpando township and the magnificent Volta Lake.
BIHECO became a reality through committed faithful of the Catholic Church in the then Keta Diocese, the people of Kpando-Aloryi [on whose land the school stands] and others from the Netherlands through the initiative of the first Headmaster, Rev. Fr. Cornelis Wilhelmus Leonardus Priems, SMA.
