The Vocations Director of the Catholic Diocese of Wa in Ghana’s Upper West Region, Rev. Fr. Aloysius Sunnoba, has reminded Catholics of the importance and reverence attached to the Body and Blood of Christ which is the Spiritual Food for all.
Preaching the homily at a Mass on June 2, 2024 to mark this year’s Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ at the St. Francis Xavier Junior Seminary Chapel, Wa, he asked the people of God to make a new covenant with God by eating and drinking the Body and Blood of Christ.
Fr. Sunnoba who is a teacher at the St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary added that this feast of Corpus Christi (Body and Blood of Christ) invites Catholics to reflect deeply on the profound mystery of the Eucharist – the sacrament through which Christ offers Himself to us in a tangible, life-giving way.
According to the Vocations Director, the Eucharist is the fulfillment of the ancient covenants God made with His people, saying, through Moses, God established a covenant with Israel, sealed with the blood of animals.
Through Christ, God establishes a new and everlasting covenant, sealed with His own blood, he added, teaching that “when we partake in the Eucharist, we are not merely remembering a past event but entering into a living reality.”
We receive the body and blood of Christ, who gives Himself to us completely, inviting us into an intimate union with Him. This sacrament nourishes our souls, strengthens our faith, and commits us to live as true disciples, following Christ’s command to love and serve one another.
He encouraged the students and Catholics in general to renew their gratitude for this profound gift and endeavour to approach the Eucharist with reverence and awe, recognizing it as the source and summit of our Christian life.
“May the body and blood of Christ transform us, drawing us closer to God and to one another, as we live out the new covenant in our daily lives,” he stated.
