CARITAS Ghana Launches Border Security Improvement Project

Caritas Ghana, the development agency of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has launched another social intervention project on Strengthening Border Security (SBS) for human mobility in Ghana.

The SBS seeks to increase community knowledge on the dangers and consequences of illegal migration, Strengthen partnerships between border security agencies and stakeholders within the country and across the West African region.

It will also increase the theoretical and technical knowledge of over 2,000 border security officials on early detection and capture of perpetrators and strict enforcement of migration policies by Government law enforcement agencies to safeguard the human rights and dignity of the vulnerable people.

The project is expected to target some five thousand victims of illegal migration involving children, women, men and the youth, especially those unemployed.

Launching the Project in Accra on December 23, the Executive Secretary of Caritas Ghana, Mr. Samuel Zan Akologo said it would be centered in nine regions of Ghana namely; Central, Ahafo, Northern, Greater Accra, Oti, Upper West, Upper East, Volta and Western Regions.

By nature of the project, it would involve partnership from institutions such as the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Ministry of Interior, the Ghana Police Service, Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, UNHCR, UNHRC, UN Migration and IOM Ghana including Municipal and District Assemblies and the media.

The SBS project is in collaboration with International Center for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and Caritas Ghana and funded by the European Union through the ICMPD and SBS Ghana and expected to last for 2years.
