Caritas Ghana, the charity wing of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference in collaboration with caritas Africa, over the past weeks have hosted meetings on Africa Inclusive Economic Recovery Campaign in an attempt to help African economies which are in distressed situations as a result of economic hardships in African Countries.
An advocacy training for news editors and reporters was hosted again by Caritas Ghana on October 31, 2022 at the National Catholic Secretariat under the theme: “The Role of the Media in Securing an Inclusive Economic Recovery and Debt Relief.”
The training entailed literacy sessions on the Special Drawing Rights ( SDRs) and Debt Cancellation Policy and a session on the Role of the Media in advocating for debt restructuring and holding government accountable for the utilization of SDRs.
Mr. Thomas Awiapo, the Acting National Director of Caritas Ghana emphasised the responsibility of the media to demand “fiscal responsibility, sound economic management and advocacy for debt restructuring” from the government.
He also said that addressing structural economic challenges requires a strong cross-cutting approach that includes the media.
Transparency and accountability in public management, SDR and other effective use of public resources must ensure fiscal discipline and guarantee the well-being of citizens.
Mr. Awiapo also advised that, for the country to put the common good and interest of others first, greed; which is an enemy to the common good must be prevented to prevent greed from destroying people.
According to him, Caritas Ghana continues to call for a clear and transparent implementation that allows citizens and civil society organisations to publicly monitor how SDRs are being used to prevent diversion and also ensure that there is a fair share to the social sectors of the economy.
