Catholic Bishops in Ghana Call for Respect of Human Life Following El-Wak Stadium Tragedy.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC), currently in Damongo for their 2025 Plenary Assembly have expressed their sorrow following the tragedy that occurred at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra, during the recruitment exercise of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The incident which claimed 6 lives has also left 5 in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 12 in fairly critical condition, and others in stable conditions under observation.

In a statement signed by Most Rev Matthew Kwasia Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and Bishop of Sunyani, the Bishops have expressed their condolence to the bereaved families and have offered prayers for the repose of the departed.

The statement read, “As shepherds of the Church in Ghana, we stand in prayerful solidarity with the affected families who mourn, the wounded who struggle to heal, and all who have been shaken by this loss.”

The Bishops have also called on the government and stakeholders involved to take up necessary actions and investigate the stampede that claimed lives and caused injuries.

They have also called for accountability, reaffirming their commitment to “promoting systems that respect the sanctity of human life, foster accountability, curtail indiscipline, and advance the common good of our beloved country.”

The statement added, “May the Lord of Mercy grant rest to the departed, consolation to the afflicted, and wisdom to those entrusted with the nation’s care. May justice and compassion guide our response and bring healing and peace to our land. ”
