Catholics and non-Catholics alike of Damongo are attending the ongoing official opening of the 2025 Annual Plenary Assembly of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) today, Monday, November 10, 2025, at the Conference Hall of the Unity Center, Damongo, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
This year’s assembly is being held under the theme, “A Synodal Church at the Service of Justice and Peace in Ghana.” The weeklong event, which runs from November 7 to 14, 2025, brings together all Catholic Bishops in Ghana to pray, reflect, and deliberate on issues of faith, justice, peace, and national development.
Ahead of today’s official opening, the Bishops arrived in Damongo on Friday, November 7, and began their activities with visits to key historical and cultural sites in the Savannah Region. On Saturday, November 8, they toured the Mole National Park and the ancient Larabanga Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in West Africa.
The day’s activities concluded with a courtesy call and lunch banquet hosted by Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency and former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. Hon. Jinapor expressed his joy at welcoming the leadership of the Catholic Church to his hometown, describing their presence as a blessing to the people of the region.
The opening ceremony features addresses from key dignitaries, including the President of the GCBC, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi; the Host Bishop, Most Rev. Peter Paul Y. Angkyier; the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, His Excellency Julian Kabore; and the Guest of Honour.
It will also mark the beginning of plenary discussions and spiritual reflections that will guide the Church’s mission for the coming year.
The conference will officially close on Friday, November 14, 2025, with a Mass at St. Anne’s Cathedral, Damongo, at 6:30 p.m.
As the Catholic Bishops’ Conference opens this important gathering, the people of Damongo and the entire Savannah Region are filled with anticipation, hope, and pride in hosting the nation’s spiritual leaders.
