The Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie through the CARITAS Office in Accra has presented some items to the Ghana Prisons Service to fight COVID-19 among the inmates and Prison Officers.
The items which include 24 boxes of disposable gloves, 40 gallons of hand sanitizers, 20 gallons of liquid soap, 20 gallons of disinfectant (Dettol), and 20 gallons of bleach (Parazone)
The others are 17 buckets of powdered soap, 11 pieces of Veronica buckets, 10 pieces of receptacles, 30 packs of tissues and 90 packs of bottled water.
The CARITAS office which is the charity unit of the Catholic Church facilitated the mobilisation of the items in response to a request from the Ghana Prisons Service.
Archbishop Kwofie noted that the gesture to the Prisons Service is only to improve the already existing relationship and solidarity with the service which coincided with his passion and plan to reach out to the Prisoners during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He thanked the many Catholic faithful and societies in the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra who continues to donate to support the fight against COVID-19.
Mr. Patrick Darko Missah, the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service who received the items thanked the Archbishop and the Catholic Church for the long-standing relationship between the service and the church.
In his assurance to the Archbishop, he noted that the Ghana Prisons Service will make very good use of the items and ensure they are fairly distributed to the respective stations.
Accompanying the Archbishop to do the presentation were Fr. George Ekow Mensah, Director at the CARITAS Office, Fr. Neumann Tetteyfio, Financial Administrator, Fr. Anthony Agnes Adu-Mensah, Secretary to the Archbishop and Rev. Bro. Domelevo, SVD Director at the Catholic Digest Office.
The Prison Officers also present to witness the ceremony include Mrs. Josephine Fredua-Agyeman, Deputy Director-General ( Finance & Administration), Mr. L. K. A Ansah, Director of Prisons (Welfare) and Mr. Nelson Duut, Director of Prisons (Technical & Services)
Others were Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, Ag. Director of Prisons in charge of Health and DDP Samuel Akolbire, Ag. Commanding Officer at the Headquarters.
Per the Church’s calendar, the Lenten Season is a season for caring for the vulnerable in the society by giving alms and other charitable deeds. Hence, the donation is in adherence to the Church’s good deeds.
The Catholic Archdiocese is still making preparations for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and medical consumables to be presented to some Health facilities of the Church and reach out to some needy people with food items to support them amidst this period of “restricted movements of persons” in the Greater Accra Region.
