The Association of Catholic Heads of Higher Institutions (ACHHI) in Ghana, has expressed the need to prioritise discipline in Catholic Schools across the nation.
At its 44th Annual National Conference at OLA Senior High School, Ho in the Volta Region, they urged all stakeholders in the education sector to assist in the formation of students and instilling discipline in them.
The members of ACHHI gathered at Ho under the theme, “Promoting Discipline in our schools: a shared responsibility.”
At the opening ceremony on May 29, 2024, the National President of ACHHI, Sr. Benedicta Uzokwe, HHCJ, stated that “Quality education cannot exist if discipline, is not given its rightful place in our educational system.
She lamented that our education system has become producing deviant students who will become problem to the country.”
The members pledged to “demonstrate a high level of discipline in the discharge of their duties and be more innovative and create more room for the use of dialogue to address students’ concerns in schools to discourage the use of violence by students.”
They urged other stakeholders in the education sector in Ghana to “display discipline in carrying out their duties and play their roles actively toward ensuring discipline and quality education in schools.”
The Guest speaker, Rev. Fr. Dr. Alex Salakpi, a Lecturer at the University of Ghana, acknowledged the tremendous roles of all stakeholders and lamented about cases of malpractice in conducting examinations in some Catholic Schools.
Togbe Afiatso III, Dutor of Ho Bankoe, who chaired the opening ceremony, was amazed at the efforts of the Catholic Church in education in Ghana and was grateful to the Conference for their choice of theme.
Some other dignitaries who graced the occasion were the Most Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, SVD, the Catholic Bishop of Ho Diocese; Mr. Francis Agbemadi, the Regional Director of Education; Mr. Archibald Yao Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister.
There were Goodwill Messages from the Catholic Bishop of Ho, Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
In their considered view, students should experience quality education that would adequately prepare them intellectually, socially, emotionally and make them self-motivated towards developing themselves and society.
