Catholics in Accra to Process With Cross Crafted from Waste Materials at Agbogbloshie

Must read

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, represented by the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Commission, in collaboration with Missio Aachen in Germany has announced a cross procession, featuring a unique recycled cross crafted from waste materials gathered at the Agbogbloshie scrapyard.

The announcement was made during a press conference on March 19, 2026 at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Adabraka, Accra.

The event, themed, “From Waste to Witness: Ghana’s Recycled Cross for the Mission of Christ”, emphasizes the Church’s role in identifying creativity , championing waste reduction, and fostering human development.

According to Most Rev. Anthony Narh Asare, one of the Auxiliary Bishops of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, the “City of God” Cross was previously presented to Pope Leo XIV, who directed that it be returned to Ghana for Catholics in the country and citizens to appreciate its message.

He noted, “Pope Leo was so impressed by it and he directed that it must come back to Ghana for us to appreciate what went into the making of this cross before they send it back to Rome because sometimes we are here we don’t know the good things that are happening around us”.

He also noted that the recycled cross was made primarily from metal and electronic by a young artisan named Iddrisu, who has been instrumental in similar efforts, producing thousands of religious medals for Missio Aachen over the past year.

Bishop Asare added, “We have been working on this site and with the people we refer to be at the scrapyard, a place we call a throw away place has become a place of hope, a place where uselessness becomes useful and a place where the ugly is dumped and beautiful things spring from”.

The procession is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2026 where Catholic faithful will carry the cross from the Agbogbloshie scrapyard through streets in Accra to the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka.

The following day, Sunday, March 29, 2026, the Archdiocese will celebrate a thanksgiving Mass at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio.

The initiative aims to showcase the creative potential of recycling and raise awareness about reducing waste and reusing materials.
