Following the presidential declaration of Wednesday, March 25, 2020, as a national day of fasting and prayer, religious groups and all citizens of Ghana will today embark on a spiritual journey of sacrifice amidst prayer to seek the intervention of God in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.
During the day, participants of the spiritual exercise in the West African country are expected to pray for 10 topics including thanksgiving, forgiveness, divine intervention to stop the pandemic, prayer of healing for affected persons, protection for health workers and the discovery of a vaccine.
The people of faith are also expected to pray for God to draw humanity closer to himself, strength for families, pray against evil plans against Christianity as well as pray for wisdom for the president and all leaders of the state. A circular by the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs stated.
In his 3rd address to the Nation since the outbreak of the pandemic, President Akufo-Addo indicated that while it is good to adhere to the preventives protocols listed by the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, seeking the face of God in times like this is necessary.
“Whilst we continue to adhere to these measures and wrap up our efforts to defeat this virus, I urge all of us also to seek the face of the Almighty. So on Wednesday 25 March 2020, I appeal to all Ghanaian Christians and Muslims to observe a national day of fasting and prayer” the President urged.
Ghana’s COVID-19 cases currently stand at 53 with two casualties recorded so far with the majority of the confirmed cases said to be Ghanaians, who returned home from affected countries.
According to the Ghana Health Service, “The sudden spike in case incidence is as a result of the mandatory quarantine and compulsory testing for all travellers entering Ghana, as directed by the president. As of 24 March, a total of 1,030 are under mandatory quarantine; 844 have had their samples taken; 510 have had the samples tested; out of these twenty-six (26) tested positive for COVID-19.”
Some countries around the world such as Italy, Spain and Iran have been overwhelmed by the disease which broke out in China last December.
The World Health Organization’s Head, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday, March 19, warned African countries to ‘prepare for the worst’ and learn from how the spread of the virus has sped up elsewhere.
With the global cases surpassing 300,000, many Ghanaians are worried that should the country record more cases, it will be difficult to handle the numbers with the existing state of the country’s health infrastructure.
