Despite Daily Masses, Lives of Some Catholics Remain Embarrassing – Catholic Priest Laments

Must read

A Catholic priest in Ghana has described as scandalous, the phenomenon of Catholic Christians not changing from their negative ways despite partaking in Eucharistic celebrations on a daily basis.

According to Rev. Fr. Samuel Akoto-Mensah, National Director of Religious Education and Catechetics in Ghana, Catholics believe that by receiving the body and blood of Christ, they are renewing their covenant with God about the ills in society.

He noted that “The scandal however is that, individual believers and Christian groups seem to be making little impact on the world of darkness. The embarrassing fact before us shows that while hundreds of thousands of Eucharistic celebrations go on around the world everyday, the social life of many Catholics is virtually untouched by this devotion.”

He added that “The scandal of the church is that despite the hundreds of thousands of Eucharistic celebrations which emphasise the self-sacrifice of Jesus and core devotees, to a life of painful sharing, and mutual self-giving, most Christians are as selfish and self-seeking as their neighbors who have never heard of the body and blood of Christ.”

In a homily marking the Solemnity of Corpus Christi at the St. Dominic Catholic Church, Taifa, Accra on June 6, Fr. Akoto Mensah emphasised that “No less than 250 thousand people gather each week for the celebration of the Eucharist but the civil structures of the world remain in place.

In different parts of the world, the affluent and the poverty-stricken, the possessed and dispossessed, the oppressor and the oppressed; the unjust judge and the helpless widow, the fraudulent businessman or government official and the exploited citizen; the greedy politician and the victims of greed, the tribalist and the victims of tribalism, all partake in the same Eucharistic celebration and often receive Communion without their guilty positions being seriously challenged.”

“It is a great embarrassment to the Church that while the Eucharist marks the new covenant of reconciliation of brotherhood and of mankind, in many parts of the world, violent clashes, broken relationships, divorce and hatred, revenge and the lack of forgiveness are not diminishing but rather are on the increase even in communities that are wholly Christian,” he opined.
