The Holy Rosary School at Donkorkrom in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District, Eastern Region of Ghana, has commemorated the Global Hand washing Day (GHD) under the theme “Why are clean hands still important?”
The October 15, 2024 event aimed at increasing awareness on the importance of hand washing with soap featured a brief talk on the need to wash hands always delivered by the Headmistress of Holy Rosary School, Sr. Stella Nwosu, MSHR in the assembly hall.
There were equally demonstrations in front of the school’s administrative block on the proper ways of washing hands using soap and running water by the administration and staff and some of the learners were helped to practice.
In the interactive talk between the headmistress of the Holy Rosary Sisters owned school, and the learners, Sr. Nwosu underlined the fact that “the Ghana Education Services has told us to remind you people again to be conscious of the importance of washing hands”.
The headmistress imploring various responses from the learners on why they must wash their hands at all times, added that when they fail to wash their hands, they tend to invite germs into their bodies which will make them fall sick, and so encouraged them to wash their hands in and out of season.
“When we visit the toilet, we wash our hands, when we want to eat, we wash our hands, and when we do cleaning we wash our hands, and when we send our fingers into our nostrils, we wash our hands,” she buttressed.
The school head further remarked that it is safer and more hygienic to use running water and soap for washing the hands as opposed to using stagnant water, which may be infected with germs, and would have an adverse effect on their health.
“Disinfecting your hands is good, but the best is using water and soap to wash the hands,” she added.
The learners were encouraged to keep the practice of washing their hands with soap even as they go back to their respective homes.
