The former president of the republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama in the quest to support in the fight against COVID-19 has supplied some personal protective equipment (PPE) and others to the staff of some selected health facilities in the country.
He donated 500 PPEs and 500 gum boots amounting to 300,000 Ghana Cedis to the Covid-19 team to be given to health facilities especially Korle Bu and Tamale teaching hospital.
He added that he has plans to secure another 150 PPEs which would cost 90,000 Ghana Cedis to support other health facilities in the regions.
This he said will sum up the total number of PPEs donated to 650 sets which cost 390,000 Ghana Cedis.
He also stated that he presented 100 PPEs, drinking water and other items to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge hospital) in response of the plight of the hospital staff to help safeguard those without the virus and protect themselves.
He added that it was essential for health workers to have enough PPEs but their inability to have them is as a result of not planning early as a country and also the delay in importation of test kits.
He pledged to consider an insurance package for health workers should his party be voted into power in the near future.
He acknowledged the efforts of the working force in the health sector who are doing their possible best to help control the coronavirus pandemic and also the heavy investment his government made during his tenure of office in the health sector.
This, he said, has become very useful to the country especially in this time of coronavirus.
According to former president Mahama, even though there is shortage of PPEs and test kits because the demands has gone up globally, he and his team have been able to secure some quantity of it to be distributed among some selected hospitals.
He continued by saying Korle Bu especially due to the threats from the health workers in defense of their own protection.
He commended the general public for setting asides religious differences, political and other factors to fight the coronavirus in unity.
In addition, he advised the general public to stay at home if there is nothing essential to be done and also disinfect working surfaces as often as possible because we are not in normal times.
