Gay conference disallowed in Ghana – Persistent calls yield result

Must read

Recent questions raised by Ghanaians a week ago as to why the choice of Ghana to host the Pan Africa International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association meeting in Ghana has yielded fruit as there are reports that the Government of Ghana has mentioned that homosexual and their activist will not be allowed to have their conference in Ghana.

Recently, the Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie made a call on Christians and Muslims alike to speak against an alleged planned international conference of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community in Ghana.

The 5th edition of the Pan Africa Conference on the theme “Sankofa: looking back to our roots- reclaiming our rights” was scheduled to be held in Accra from July 27 to 31 for the LGBTQ community within the country.

The Pan Africa International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), organisers of the conference had served notice on its website that, “our 5th Regional Conference, 27 – 31 July 2020 in Accra, Ghana.” “This will be the first PAI conference in West Africa,” the association added.

This was not well received by the public when news went viral in the media space, making many Ghanaians including Religious leaders appeal to the citizens to uphold their religious values.

“As Christians, we must be aware that our society is becoming more difficult and we must stand up and uphold our values as Christians. We have heard about the “sankorfa” of the lesbians and gays who are planning to have their maiden meeting here in our country, Ghana. “Why Ghana?” the Catholic Archbishop of Accra questioned.

“If it is true, we need to speak against it because our values do not allow us to do that. For us Christians and Muslims, we have values and we must endeavour to up them no matter the circumstances of life, he added.

Reacting to the development, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, said: “It is a no, government won’t allow it to happen in Ghana.”

According to reports monitored by newswatchgh.com, revealed in an interview with CTV on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has rejected plans by the LGBT community to have their conference in Ghana.

“As we speak today a lot of international conferences have been cancelled. We should have been at the UN General Assembly which starts today but it has been cancelled. All international engagements and conferences have also been cancelled.

“I am a Christian likewise the President. The president has said no to the gay conference. Gay conference has nothing to do with the Ministry, it has nothing to do with the government,” she added.
