A German-based Turkish philanthropist, Buelent Zorlu has donated assorted items to the pupils of Alakple Roman Catholic Basic School and some elderly members of the Alakple St. Joseph Catholic Church in the Volta Region of Ghana.
The items donated on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, made up of mainly slightly used clothing and some few new ones and shoes were initiated by Ms. Philippine Avevor, an indigene of Alakple based in Germany.
Beneficiaries of the items were pupils of Basic 1 and Basic 6 as well as some elderly of the Roman Catholic Church.
Presenting the items on behalf of the donor who is based in Pinneberg, Germany, Mr. Damian Dieu Donne Avevor, a renowned Ghanaian Catholic journalist and a citizen of Alakple, said the gesture was to support the needy ones in Alakple in the Anloga District of the Volta Region of Ghana.
He said although the items would not solve all the needs of the pupils and the Church members, he believed it would bring some relief to them.
According to Mr. Avevor, “the donation was a way of giving back to one’s own community as the best way to teach the younger generation of the essence of charity and also to put smiles on their faces.”
He recalled that last year on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, the A.Y. Avevor Family in the Diaspora donated some learning materials to some pupils including stationeries; exercise books, pencils, erasers, pens, crayons, sharpeners and footballs.
He assured the School and the Church of the continuous support of the Avevor family to help alleviate some of the plights of the pupils of Alakple Roman Catholic School.
The Local Manager of the Alakple Roman School and Parish Priest of the Church, Rev. Fr. Michael Gardemor, who received the items on behalf of the School and Church thanked Mr. Zorlu and the Avevor family for the kind gesture and said the items would go a long way to bring some relief to the people, particularly the pupils.
He appealed to Mr. Zorlu and the Avevor family not to hesitate to give their unflinching support to the School which has many needs including the provision of books in the School’s Library and computers and accessories in the Information Technology and Communication (ICT) Centre.
On his part, the Headteacher of the School, Mr. Bernard Efah also expressed gratitude to the donors and indicated that the children were in serious needs of learning and sports materials like exercise books, pencils, pens, crayons, erasers, sharpeners, footballs, football boot, volley balls, net balls, jerseys as well as school uniforms for the vulnerable pupils.
He entreated other indigenes of Alakple to support the School in all diverse ways, adding that the School lacked basic teaching and learning materials which are desperately needed to provide quality education for the children.
