Ghana National Youth Council Meeting Opens in Obuasi Diocese

The 2022 edition of the Ghana National Catholic Youth Council (GHANCYC) Meeting commenced in Obuasi with an opening Ceremony held at the Pope John Paul II Formation and Training Centre at Ofoase Kokoben.

The 46th  Annual General Council Meeting brought together delegates from the various Dioceses, Archdioceses as well as the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom and National Movements (CYO, IMCS Pax Romana) in the country.

It is expected to have series of activities from Friday, September 15 to Sunday September 19, 2022.

The gathering is under the theme: “Fratelli tutti and Covid 19 Pastoral Opportunities and Challenges in Ghana”.

In his opening address, Chairperson of GHANCYC, Mr. Joseph Besigrinee said although the implementation of the age policy for youth leaders in the church has come with some challenges, the Council is  determined to find solutions to these  challenges.

According the Mr. Joseph Basigrinee, the Council will continue the formation of these young leaders through the various Arch/Diocesan, Vicariate Youth Councils, the Provincial Councils and Movements to raise worthy and well-equipped Catholic Youth whose faith will be unwavering for the church and Ghana.

Rev. Fr. Stephen Ampomah, Director of Liturgy of Obuasi Diocese who delivered the Keynote address at the ceremony said the theme for this year’s Annual General Council Meeting is to afford the youth the sense to let our way of life be marked by the favour of the Gospel in living as true brothers and sisters.

The day is expected to end with an interaction with a discussions on a draft Youth Policy, NICYFOP Training on Meetings and Minutes Writing and discussions from the Catholic Professional Guilds.

The Ghana National Catholic Youth Council (GHANCYC) is a unit under the Department of Pastoral Ministry and Evangelisation of the National Catholic Secretariat. GHANCYC was established by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference in 1974 through the instrumentality of the late Servant of God Cardinal Peter Porekuu Dery.

The Council’s mandate includes: train, coordinate, evaluate, report and serve as the mouthpiece of Catholic youth at National level.

The core aims of GHANCYC includes to ensure total formation of the youth through the creation of a medium for the spiritual, moral, intellectual and social development of the youth.

It is to foster in the youth an awareness of their responsibility, rights and duties.

It is also to ensure effective means of interaction between the youth of the church and the church’s hierarchy, between the youth of the Catholic Church and the youth of other Religious Organisation and youth organisations.

To protect the interest of the Catholic Youth in the Ghanaian society.
