Ghana’s Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga Calls for Action to Address Rising Violence in North East and Upper East Regions

The Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga has appealed for peace and collaboration in response to the alarming rise in violence affecting the North East and Upper East Regions.

In a March 4 press statement signed by the Most Rev. Alfred Agyenta, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga, and expressed deep concern over recent violent incidents in the area.

“We have observed with deep sorrow the escalation and spread of violence in Bawku and its surrounding areas, extending into parts of the West Mamprusi in the North East Region. On the eve of 28th February 2025, we were once again confronted with violent incidents in communities and towns within the Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District, resulting in property destruction and loss of life. ”.

In light of these events, the Diocese acknowledged government efforts to maintain peace, including the deployment of security forces to affected areas and the imposition of curfews in Bawku and Walewale.

They however raised concerns about the challenges facing the affected communities due to the measures taken by the government.

“The populations in these communities are now living under curfew, which restricts their rights to free movement and other liberties. This situation is undoubtedly detrimental to social and economic activities. We have also received reports of excessive use of force by security personnel in the affected areas.”

The Diocese have also called upon all parties involved in the conflict to demonstrate collective commitment and action to reduce the suffering of vulnerable populations, particularly children, women, and the elderly.

The statement highlighted that continued violence could affect trade relations with neighboring countries like Burkina Faso and Togo, further straining an already unstable economy.

As a partner in development, the Church has long supported initiatives aimed at providing essential services such as health care and education, striving to empower communities toward sustainable living.

“Over the years, we have supported various initiatives to ensure that the populations have at least minimum access to essential services, including health, education, and livelihoods, with the goal of enabling people to live with dignity and peace. Other faith-based organizations have made similar efforts to bridge this development gap”.

In its call to action, the Diocese urged security personnel to uphold professionalism and respect in their interactions with affected communities, traditional authorities to engage actively in conflict management to foster peace and civil society and peace actors “ to unite in promoting safety and security for all, particularly in the two regions.”
