Major General William Adjei, President of the Supreme Subordinate Commandery

In a statement issued by Major General William Adjei, President of the Supreme Subordinate Commandery and Noble Sister Victoria Anyan, President of the Supreme Subordinate Ladies’ Auxiliary, they emphasized that their organization is built upon the principles of the Catholic faith and supports the Church’s position against Catholics’ membership of the Freemasonry.

In their statement, they stated that their members believe in the Holy Trinity and the teachings of the church adding that they operate under the guidance of a clergy who serve as spiritual directors and advisors.

“The members of the Association have firm belief in the Trinitarian God as well as all the teachings and doctrines of the Catholic Church – we believe in and recognize the Trinity. At all levels of the Association, there are Clergymen who act as the Spiritual Director or Chaplain or Spiritual Advisor.”

The statement noted a long history of opposition to Freemasonry within the Catholic Church, since 1717 when modern Freemasonry was established.

“In 1983, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, reiterated this position of the Church in its “Declaration on Masonic Associations”.

On May 7, 2009, the Ghana Catholic Bishop’s Conference re-emphasized the Catholic Church’s objection to Catholics joining Freemasonry and spelt out the sanctions for Catholics who join the Masonic Associations. This admonition was repeated in 2013, 2017 and 2025.

Since the birth of modern Freemasonry in 1717, eight popes have, through constitutions, encyclicals and apostolic letters etc, explicitly denounced Freemasonry and Masonic principles in relation to the Catholic Faith.”

Furthermore, KSJI also outlined their objectives, including fostering love for the Roman Catholic Church, promoting respect for its spiritual authority, enhancing the moral and social well-being of their members and their families and developing the spirit of love of country and of its institutions.

The Knights of St. John International in Ghana since its establishment in 1933 have “exemplified the theological virtues of the Catholic Faith. They are examples of Catholic gentlemen and ladies and beacons of truth in their community”
