This year’s Mother’s Day celebration on Sunday, May 12, 2024, was marked in style as the first of its kind by parishioners of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Koluedor, a suburb of the Dangme-West district within the Battor-Ada Deanery of the Archdiocese of Accra.

The celebration was preceded by a week-long programme designed to honour and celebrate the essence of motherhood, encompassing a diverse range of activities aimed at enriching the understanding and appreciation of mothers.

The activities included talks on marriage and importance of maternal well-being and healthcare, aerobics, clean-up activity dubbed “Arise and Shine the Lord’s Temple” and an evening with the priests, to make merry in anticipation of the climax; Mother’s Day celebration.

The climax and thanksgiving Mass on Sunday, May 12, was spiced up with activities including poetry recitations, choreography, surprise your mother or wife, captivating theatrical performances and down to other fun thrilling activities designed to celebrate and honour mothers, fostering a sense of unity and joy within the community.

In his homily, the Priest-in-Charge, Rev. Fr. Gregory Aabaa, OP in his homily, congratulated all mothers for their roles in the family and society which are highly appreciated.

He urged the faithful never to give up the struggle, saying that women searching for the fruit of the womb must not despair for they are not failed mothers because they do not have a child of their own.

Motherhood, he noted was not only associated with giving birth but also with taking care of children even if they are not your own, adding, “Some have even adopted children and were raising them well while some biological mothers on the other hand have been so irresponsible and neglectful.

He cautioned Mothers to be mindful of what they say to their children, asking them to rather bless their children in their words and not curse them for such words from mothers tend to make or destroy the lives of their children.

He entreated Mothers not to turn their children’s love towards themselves alone but should make every effort to let their children appreciate their fathers when they do something for the children.

Fr. Aabaa reminded Mothers that they had the responsibility to discipline their children and not just wait for the husband to come home to offer some correctional measures to the children when they go wrong.

“It makes the children feel that their mothers are angels while their fathers are hard-hearted devils who beat and torture them,” he stated.

He advised the men to accept and appreciate their wives and not make life more burdensome for them.

The steering committee thanked members of the parish and urged the community to honour the invaluable contributions of mothers, expressing the deepest gratitude and love for their boundless compassion and unwavering support.
