New Horizon Special School is set to host its annual Fun Day Games tomorrow, May 23, 2025, under the theme, “For the righteous fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.”
The annual Fun Day Games were derived from the international Special Olympics, which was launched in Ghana in the year 2000.
The Kennedy Family started the Special Olympics in the US. It is specially for intellectually challenged children, teaching them that they have special capabilities.

In recent times, the Fun Day Games aims to showcase the talents and sportsmanship of the special needs population in Ghana while advocating for fitness and sports for all.
The 2025 edition, featuring Epicentre Special School, New Gbawe, will provide an opportunity for students to not only demonstrate their abilities but also to enjoy their day with fun, engaging in various activities like Bottle-filling Challenge, Three-Legged Race, Dance Jam, Lime & Spoon Race, Wheelchair Race and many other competitions between staff and parents.
The event is free and open to the public and all participants will be recognized as winners and will receive medals for their rewards.

Key figures in attendance will include Ms. Sylvia Francois, Board Chairperson of the New Horizon Special School Board, and Ms. Nana Abena Kwakyi, Chairperson of the Games and Managing Director of Morning Star School.
Other board members and embassy personnel are also expected to join the Fun Day Games.
In an interview with, Ms. Sylvia Francois, she emphasized the importance of these games to special children as it empowers them and make them feel accepted in society.
She said, “It promotes inclusivity because the kids all get a chance to play a part and find where they excel. Society also accepts them”
She noted that “Everyone loves it and participates as they can. Volunteering., taking part in the sports, contributing snacks and money”

According to Dr. George Francois, Interim Executive Director of the New Horizon Special School, he recognized the support of neighboring schools, who promote inclusivity through their volunteer programs and urged the general public to support the school’s mission.
He said, “Part of our mission is to promote inclusivity, especially in terms of interactions between the general public and our special students. We congratulate schools like GIS, Lincoln, Faith Montessori, and St. Charbel, among others, for the volunteer programs they create to promote inclusivity, acceptance, and tolerance. We encourage institutions to reach out to us with ideas that promote inclusivity.”
He acknowledged the previous year’s support from the Consolidated Bank Ghana and appealed for support for this year’s edition, noting, “This year we have reached out for help, but have not been able to get anything as yet.”

The New Horizon Special School since its establishment in 1972 and founded by Mrs. Salome Francois of blessed memory is dedicated to the education and development of children and adults with special needs and autism.
The school is equipped with facilities which help the students to acquire special skills in kente weaving, crafts making and sewing.
Students in the school go through academic training with courses like Sensory Training, Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy tailored to their special needs and also to offer them life skills.
The New Horizon Special School invites the general public to sponsor the games through promotional materials, displaying banners, and distributing flyers to engage with the community.
