Newly Elected CMSR, GH President Pledges Renewal, Collaboration for Prophetic Witness

Sr. Dr. Lucy Hometowu, SMMC, newly elected President of the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana (CMSR, GH), has pledged to prioritize renewal, collaboration, and service as she leads the Conference for the next three years.

She emphasised her commitment to their slogan, “Charisms for One Mission” to unite Religious Congregations in addressing Ghana’s social challenges.

The elections took place during the Conference’s second biennial conference, held from October 6 to 10, , 2025 in Brofoyaw in the Archdiocese of Cape Coast, under the theme, “Consecrated Life for Human Rights Protection and Ecological Justice,” drawing members from various Religious Congregations nationwide.

In an interview with Newswatchgh.com, Sr. Hometowu outlined her vision aligned with the Conference’s synodal spirit, noting that she works with an “executive team and together, we shall maintain a vibrant formidable and prophetic Catholic Missionary body in Ghana, collaboratively responding to the signs of the times through sustainable programs towards the positive transformation of society.”

Sr. Hometowu, who is the Superior of the Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church ( SMMC, also noted that strengthening formation, leadership development, safeguarding vulnerable groups, and enhancing inter-congregational ties are the ways through which her leadership will promote renewal and service to Ghana.

She added, “I plan to foster unity through open dialogue, strong collaborative teams, shared projects, and capacity-building initiatives that bring congregations together for the common good.”

To foster unity, Sr. Hometowu stated that open dialogues, shared projects, and capacity-building initiatives will be organized through active listening, discernment, and ongoing formation.

In addition, she noted that through her leadership, human rights and ecological justice would be advocated for in line with Laudato Si, the second Encyclical of Pope Francis on Environment.

She said, “In terms of ecology, we plan to implement programmes that encourage environmental education, tree planting, waste management, and community sensitization in line with Laudato Si, the second encyclical of Pope Francis.”

Sr. Hometowu added, “Caring for our environment is not just an ethical duty but a spiritual one. Ecology, spirituality, and religion intersect in the eco-spirituality, and it is a collective responsibility.”

Other elected leaders of the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious were Fr. Dennis Pam, M. Afr, Vice President; Sr. Martina Dery, CSC, Treasurer; Sr. Joana Agbotse, HSC; Councillor Sr. Perpetua Acquah, OLA; Councillor Friar Vitus Mensah, OFM Conv.; and  Councillor Fr. Raphael Kobina Annan, CSSp.
