I n a Christmas message delivered at the Accra Archdiocesan Nine Lessons and Carols service held at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Auxiliary Bishop Most Rev. John Kobina Louis emphasized that the theme “Pilgrims of Hope: A Year of Discipleship,” inspired by Pope Francis’ declaration of 2025 as a Jubilee Year invites the faithful to “to follow evermore closely Jesus Christ who is both the Divine Pilgrim and our ultimate hope”.
Bishop Louis in his address at the Holy Spirit Cathedral on Friday, December 20, 2024, described “pilgrims” as individuals on a sacred journey seeking spiritual renewal and a closer encounter with God.
He quoted Pope Francis, stating, “The Church is not a fortress but a pilgrim community that constantly walks toward the Kingdom of God”
He elaborated on the concepts of hope and discipleship, highlighting hope as a theological virtue that relies on Christ’s promises and discipleship as a lifelong commitment to following Jesus and living according to His teachings.
He also reflected on the nativity of Christ, illustrating how figures such as the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, the shepherds, and the wise men exemplify the essence of being ”Pilgrims of Hope.”
Bishop Louis therefore urged the congregation to embrace their roles as pilgrims on a journey of faith, particularly in challenging times.
He said, “Discipleship involves embracing the challenges of the Christian life, persevering in faith, and carrying out the mission of Christ. Jesus calls His followers to take up their cross, deny themselves, and walk in His footsteps”.
He also encouraged the faithful to become instruments of hope, bringing the light of Christ to those in darkness and serving others with love.
The Jubilee Year theme for the Accra Archdiocese in 2025, “A Year of Discipleship,” calls Catholics to embody their faith through active participation.
As the Church prepares for the upcoming Jubilee Year, Bishop Louis has invited all Catholics to renew their commitment to faith and hope. He emphasized that this period should be a time for reflection on individual pilgrimages towards God, sustained by unwavering hope.
