NUGS Diaspora Bloc Rejects UK Chapter Appointments, Calls for Democratic Elections

Must read

The NUGS Diaspora Bloc has rejected recent appointments made by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) President for the NUGS-UK Chapter’s executive positions for the 2025/2026 academic year.

In a communiqué issued on January 22, 2026, and signed by representatives from various diaspora chapters, the Bloc described the appointments as “unconstitutional, procedurally improper, and not reflective of the will of Ghanaian students resident in the United Kingdom.”

In the communiqué, the NUGS Diaspora Bloc argued that the NUGS President’s actions exceed constitutional limits, citing articles from the NUGS Constitution that render any inconsistent act null and void.

The statement read, “Articles 12 and 13 clearly establish Congress as the highest decision-making authority of the Union, with the Central Committee and National Executive Committee playing defined oversight roles. The powers and duties of the President under Article 17 must therefore be exercised within these constitutional limits and in consultation with the appropriate organs of the Union, not through unilateral action.”

The statement also acknowledged Article 18 of the NUGS constitution, which recognizes diaspora blocs but requires them to operate in line with the Union’s democratic principles, including fair representation and participation.

Additionally, it stated, “In practice, the role of the National NUGS leadership in the formation of diaspora chapters is limited to the inaugural stage only. Once established, diaspora chapters operate under their own internal constitutions, conduct their own congresses, and elect their leaders through democratic processes approved by their members”.

It also stated there is no constitutional provision empowering the NUGS President to appoint executives for existing diaspora chapters, describing any attempt to impose leadership via presidential letter “without transparent consultation, due process, or elections involving the affected students and relevant organs, a breach of both the NUGS Constitution and the autonomy of the Diaspora Bloc and its chapters.”

The NUGS Diaspora Bloc has expressed its anticipation for the organization of a properly convened NUGS-UK Congress, recognized by national NUGS organs, to allow Ghanaian students in the UK to elect their own legitimate leaders peacefully, transparently, and democratically.
