Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer Sisters Foundation Embark on School Outreach Programme Against Human Trafficking

As part of the “Amewuga” advocacy campaign against human trafficking in border communities, the Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer Sisters’ Foundation (HDRSF) and the International Centre for Safe Migration (ICSM) partnered with the Anti-Human Smuggling and Trafficking in Persons (AHSTIP) Unit to embark on a School Outreach Programme.

The outreach was held on April 16, 2025 at the Three-Town Senior High School in Denu, Volta Region to raise awareness on Human trafficking among the students.

The “Amewuga” Advocacy Campaign aims at raising awareness on human trafficking and the protection of migrants’ rights, mobilizing community action, building resilience of women, girls and children against modern-day slavery, abuse and exploitation, improving support systems for victims and ultimately reducing trafficking incidents in border communities.

In an address,  Sr. Regina Ignatia Aflah, Assistant Superior General of the Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer of Accra (HDR) Congregation and the Executive Director of the Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer Sisters’ Foundation (HDRSF), noted that her Religious Congregation is committed to promoting education, protection and building the resilience of women and girls to enable them reach their potentials.

She, therefore, pledged her foundation’s commitment to partnering with ICSM and the AHSTIP Unit to raise awareness, rescue and care for trafficked victims and protect girls from exploitation and abuse in the border communities.

Justice Kudzo Normeshie, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration and Officer in Charge of AHSTIP Unit – Ghana immigration Service, Aflao, stated that, the AHSTIP Unit of the Aflao Sector Command, is committed to promoting a gender responsive migration management where gender-based migrant’s vulnerabilities are eliminated to protect women, girls, children and the youth from modern-day slavery, sexual and labour exploitation and all forms of abuses.

William Bannerman-Williams Hans, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration and the Sector 2iC, extended an appreciation on behalf of the service to the sponsors for their commitment to helping the service deliver on its mandate especially in the area of capacity building and awareness creation on Human Trafficking. He assured of the sector’s readiness for future partnerships.

The Outreach was attended by Two Thousand Three-hundred (2,300) students, teachers and management members, comprising eight hundred (800) males and one thousand five hundred (1,500) females.

The Three-Town SHS Drama Group acted and dramatized the elements of human trafficking while highlighting cyber trafficking as a new trend.

Project “Amewuga” is premised on an Ewe cultural value that teaches the importance of Human life which is Worthier than money.

This resonates with the target audience who are commercial motor riders, drivers and members of the border communities to relate well with the campaign message as it is rooted in their traditional values. This project is in line with the Policy Mainstreaming of Migration Risks at the Aflao Sector Command.
