[Opinion] COVID-19 And The Importance of Oxygen

Must read

Do we breathe everyday? Do we breathe oxygen? Do you pay for the quantity of Oxygen you breath?
It is likely that the answers to the above question may be YES or No and at most indifference. But certainly, some people are preparing each day to plan and prepare towards the unknown in this period of COVID-19.

Whiles some are checking their bank accounts, cutting down on expenditure and limiting their movements, others too are buying foodstuffs and Liquefied Petroleum Gas ( LPG ) in medium or large quantities for storage during dry times.

I cannot think far on this. Between LPG and O (or O2)…Oxygen, which one will you go for? At this time of COVID-19, Oxygen is the most important. My little village reading so far indicates that Corona Virus targets our lungs and choke our respiratory compositions and makes breathing difficult. That is why Ventilators are highly recommended to aid the flow of oxygen. The question we can ask then is …what is Oxygen?

Who created it? Can it be seen? Can it be controlled? What role does it play for our survival on the planet earth? I am limited in answering these questions but it must be said that coronavirus is teaching us to respect the originator or creator of Oxygen. Just imagine if Oxygen can be seen, touched, bottled and sold? By now, the big hands and those with loads of big bucks might have deprived the less privilege in our unequal world from breathing.

Let us think of this. We need to breathe well before thinking of all things which support our survival. The air we breathe is made up of about 21% Oxygen gas. (Cf. sciencing.com). Breathing is a significant routine and natural act of moving air through and out of our lungs to help in the exchange of Gas.

In the study of respiratory systems, all aerobic creatures need to bring in Oxygen and clean out Carbon Dioxide as a waste product. So breathing is an important industrial activity of our body systems. This is because Oxygen in breathing helps to break into smaller units of food intakes for energy. Oxygen helps in our laughter, speech, and pronunciations.

In an article written by Robert C. Brasted, “Oxygen ( O ) is a nonmetallic chemical element of Group 16 of the periodic table. It is colourless, odourless and tasteless…” (www. britanica.com). I can say that Coronavirus may have similar properties.

We need to be grateful to Oxygen gas and pray that as we breathe, the virus will not hide in this element and destroy us.

A Ventilator may not a medicine for COVID-19. It is clinical machine which is used to push air into the lungs of a patient whose breathing is insufficient while other nursing medications are applied to revive the victim. In the study of the Bible, God is depicted as a Ventilator during the creation of Man (Adam).

Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living thing ( RSV. Gen. 2:7). As a ventilator, God created Oxygen Ex nihilo (out of nothing) so that we can live by breathing. Our natural ventilators are our noses and the best gas for our living even in this Coronavirus Pandemic is OXYGEN .

May God continue to breathe into our nostrils the Oxygen of life as we face the pandemic of this virus. Stay safe and breathe safe.
