[OPINION]: The Church and the Census Data in Ghana

Must read

The following has been the summary of my response to those who keep asking me about what can be done to change the percentage decline in the Catholic population in Ghana.

In the first place, percentage decline does not mean actual membership is dwindling. It could only indicate the slow pace of growth in comparison with other bodies. I may agree that the Church is increasing in numbers but at a slow pace. Many Parishes and Rectorates are being created in virtually all dioceses and new communities are cropping up.

We are to preach Christ and prepare people to heaven. We are faithful if Jesus is well preached. We are not to focus on competition and just getting numbers. The real problem should not be about asking how to increase the numbers. Our preoccupation should be how to remain effective and faithful witnesses of Christ. May our reflection be centred on, “How faithful is the Catholic Church in Ghana in handling the great commission?”

A personal question could be, “What is my personal contribution (as lay or priest) in preaching Jesus to all people in Ghana? When was the last time someone embraced Jesus because of your intervention or ministry?

If all the people we baptize are children of Catholics, then the ministry is being handled by the domestic Church and not the body of Christ in it’s entirety. The Church exists to evangelize.
