In an enthusiastic turn out, over 3,000 children from Parishes, Rectorates and Outstations in the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra met at the St. Bernadette Soubirous School to meet the Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra on the feast of Holy Innocents.
This remarkable gathering which took place on December 28, 2024, brought together children, animators, and Priests from various Parishes across the eight deaneries of the Archdiocese of Accra.
The Feast of the Holy Innocents commemorates the death of male infants in Bethlehem at the hands of King Herod the Great in his attempt to kill the infant Jesus.
During the homily of the celebration, Rev. Fr. Elvis Mensah, Priest in Charge of Missionary Childhood in Accra, reminded the children that God had chosen them to be holy and innocent and advised them to live a life of holiness.
He said, âWhen we say holy, what it means is that you have been called, you have been chosen, you have been set apartâĤ holiness means living a life of grace. A holy person is one who respects, attends mass and reads the word of Godâ.
He added that for children to be saints, they do not need to be priests or religious figures.
âFor you to be a Saint, you should not be a priest like me, you should not be an apostle for you to be a saint. Even as a child, you can be a saint like the Holy Innocents who are celebrated today,â he said.
During the Mass, Archbishop Kwofie applauded the childrenâs mass choir from Martyrs of Uganda at Mamprobi and St. Margret Mary Catholic Church at Dansoman for their melodious tunes and great performance during the Mass.
He encouraged children from other Parishes to join the childrenâs choir in their various Parishes.
In his message, Archbishop Kwofie said that Missionary Childhood, formerly known as Sunday School, should contribute some money and donate them to needy Catholic Churches.
He said, âEvery month, the children will be keeping some money and at the end of the month it becomes big money to take care of the church where there is need, they send this money to the Church.â
He encouraged their animators to support the children in their initiative to support the needy Churches.
After the Mass, the celebration continued with fun, packed with games and activities including lime and spoon, musical chairs, dancing competition and many more which kept the children active and excited.
