Religious, Social Development News in Ghana Must Be Promoted – NewsWatch Media Directors

Must read

The Directors of Global NewsWatch Media and Communications Ltd, a fast growing Ghanaian Multi-Media Organisation, have expressed the passion to promote Developmental Journalism and to ensure publicity for all Religions and Social Development activities in Ghana and beyond.

Directors of the Company said in separate interviews that there was the need to promote Religion reporting in Ghana as a beat, an area Newswatchgh.com, a news agency owned by Global NewsWatch Media and Communication, has come to explore.

Global NewsWatch Media & Communications Ltd, is registered with the Registrar General in Ghana as Company limited by liability and manages the online News Agency, Newswatchgh.com, also registered and a certified member of the Private Newspapers and Online Publishers of Ghana (PRINPAG), the umbrella organization of all privately owned newspapers and Online News Portals in the country.

The Directors, however, lamented, “Editors tend to be more interested in business and political news and are resistant to religion news and this is manifested by the amount of time the electronic media or the space the print media allocate or budget for religion news.”

In view of this challenge, Mr. Damian Avevor, a Partner and Director in charge of Editorial and News, said Newswatchgh.com as an online News Agency has come to change the journalism landscape in Ghana by focusing on religion and social development news so that “the work of faith based organisations and various religions in the country can be recognised through accurate reportage.”

Mr. Damian Avevor

He said, “Religion reporting is an area few journalists will venture into and with the vast experience, we the owners are bringing on board something different to our local and international audience.”

“The various religious groups in Ghana are embarking on interesting and fantastic developmental projects that are not known by the public and the international communities, hence we have a target of unearthing these positive initiatives by Religious Bodies through newswatchgh.com,” Mr. Avevor who is also the Supervising Editor of Newswatchgh.com noted.

“It is our hope and conviction that Faith-Based Organisations in Ghana and beyond will collaborate and partner Global NewsWatch Media and Communications to unearth the countless interventions being made by Religious Bodies that have gone unnoticed by Ghanaians and the international world,” adding, “Newswatchgh.com will ensure it gives equal space to all Religions in Ghana.”

With his immeasurable experience, Mr. Avevor is bringing on board his prolific writing, editorial and administrative skills. Known famously for his prolific writings in his days at The Catholic Standard, the Church Media internationally, he has indeed committed his life to a passion very few will commit to in Ghana when it comes Religion Reporting.

According to him, he resigned from The Catholic Standard as the News Editor on a personal ground last year after 17 years of dedicated service to the National Catholic Weekly as a Reporter, Senior Reporter, Chief Reporter and the first ever News Editor.

Mr. Avevor has countless published stories and articles in the local and international media including, Vatican Radio (Vatican News), Catholic News Service, Catholic News Agency for Africa (CANAA), New People Magazine, Catholic Information Service for Africa (CISA), ACI Africa, Global Sisters Report, modernghana.com, ghanaweb.com, and awakenews.com.
He has to his credit some publications in the Daily Graphic, Ghanaian Times and some private Newspapers. He also contributes News Commentary on national issues to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).

He is a twice award winner of “Excellence in Journalism” (2013 and 2016) from the International Christian Organisation of the Media (ICOM), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

He is a member of the Ghana Journalists Association, an Affiliate Member of the Institute of Public Relations, Ghana, an Executive Member of the Catholic Association of Media Practitioners, Ghana and a member of the League of HIV/AIDS Reporters in Ghana.

On his part, Mr. Robert Dela Yao Mawuenyegah, who is the Executive Director of the Company and the Editor of Newswatchgh.com, said in spite of being “just a year old in the industry, Newswatchgh.com as a News Agency, has served thousands of audience both local and international with up-to-date news in Religion and social development.”

He said the Agency had received many positive feedbacks from key Religious Leaders including some Catholic Bishops, Priests and Pastors as well as some Muslim leaders “for the excellent work we are doing at Newswatchgh.com.”

He said, “Guided by its core values of Professionalism, Integrity, Timeliness, Credibility and Honesty (PITCH), the Company has a vision to become the most renowned private News Agency in Ghana, which reports solely on Religion and Social Development activities as well as to promote inter-religious dialogue for the development of Ghana and Africa.”

As a Multi-media Organisation, Mr. Mawuenyegah said it offers several communications services and it is prepared to give the best-bet in Religion and Social Development news, media consultancy services, public relations, marketing, advertising, media training, photography, video and documentary production.

According to him, the Global NewsWatch Media, has in a short time, carved a niche for itself with good credibility, saying that “as a Company, we recently published a Book Titled: ‘Journey to the Priesthood, Priests tell their Stories,’ written by a Catholic Priest of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese which was launched on June 27, 2021.”

“The Company has also taken up the marketing of the Books as publishers which puts us in a good stead in bringing some dynamic changes in the industry in Ghana,” he added.

He noted that the Directors of the Company and the Editors of Newswatchgh.com are professionals who are members of the Ghana Journalists Association, the Institute of Public Relations, Ghana and the Private Newspapers and Online Publishers of Ghana (PRINPAG).

Mr. Mawuenyegah is an astute Communications, Events and Management Professional with more than a decade of professional practice. He was the Communications and Administrative Officer for Ubora Institute, a Pan African not- for profit organisation incorporated in Ghana as ‘Ubora Quality INSTITUTE.’

He was the Programme Officer for the Department of Social Communications (DEPSOCOM) of the National Catholic Secretariat in Accra. He worked closely with the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and the various Departments, Directorates, and Units within the Secretariat.

He also belongs to many Church Committees including the Executive Council of the Implementation Committee of the National Catholic TV Implementation Project of which he is the Public Relations Officer and Organiser.

He is a member in good standing with the Ghana Journalists Association, the Institute of Public Relations, Ghana and the General Secretary for the Catholic Association of Media Practitioners, Ghana (CAMP-G).
