A member of the Sisters of St. Louis (SSL), a religious group in the Catholic Church in Ghana, has been honoured by the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region, for her long service and outstanding performance and contribution to the District especially to the school she heads and the community at large.
Sr. Jackline Agyakwa, SSL, who is the headmistress of Oku R/C School in the Afram Plains North was honoured during Ghana’s 66th Independence Day anniversary celebration at Bepoase near Nsuta in the the Sekyere Central District on Monday, March 6, 2023.
The District Chief Executive, Benjamin Kingsley Kodua was grateful to Sr. Jackline for being in Oku for almost 10years. According to him, “Oku is a place where when you post teachers, they arrive in the community in the morning, before the close of day they will be at the District Education Office begging for reposting”.
He commended Sr. Jackline for her love and care for the pupils especially the follow-ups she always made even when the pupils complete Junior High School and sometimes helps some of them to gain admission into the Senior High School.
On his part, Mr. Kwame Addo, the District Director of Education, was very grateful to the Sisters of St Louis, for making Oku their special apostolate, taking care of the poor and marginalised.
The directorate acknowledge the fact that the presence of the sisters in the school has been an inspiration and has help the school to grow, he added.
Oku is a remote area in the Afram Plains North in the Sekyere Central District of Ashanti Region, where the Sisters of St Louis run a school, clinic and a sewing center to help school dropouts and the youth who are interested in learning how to sew.
The village lacks basic amenities such as pipe born water, electricity and network. The roads leading to Oku are very bad. All these makes teachers feel reluctant to accept posting to this place.
